Circuit boards roasting on an open fire...
The story should start playing after a 30 second commercial. Direct link to the video here if the embedded player doesn't work.
"Most folks in line were hoping to do the right thing, expecting that their waste would be recycled in state-of-the-art facilities that exist here in America. But really, there's no way for them to know where all of this is going. The recycling industry is exploding and, as it turns out, some so-called recyclers are shipping the waste overseas, where it's broken down for the precious metals inside."
I still have a bunch of old computer gear in my basement that needs to get recycled somehow. Following this story makes me wonder if hauling the stuff across town to pay a recycling company to take it might be worse than simply throwing everything in the dumpster.

Sometimes I don't mind paying cover price
The Neal Stephenson appearance at the Boulder Book Store last night was a good time. The whole ticket system for getting books signed surprised me a bit. They were charging $8 to get books signed if you didn't buy Anathem from the store. I don't remember that being in effect last time I was there. Perhaps too many people were bringing books from outside to signings to inspire this rule. It shouldn't be a big deal to pay cover price for the book to support the store hosting a book tour, but maybe I am in the minority with this opinion. Current Music: WHO KILLED AMANDA PALMER |

Naughty puppet show Avenue Q is in Denver right now for a 2 week run.
I should have already gone to see it. Not sure if I will have time to go before it ends on the 21st.

Brand resurrection
I thought the Commodore brand name was long dead, but it looks like there will be a new laptop being sold as a Commodore. Looks like it probably won't be worth the price tag, but I kind of like the color scheme and logo on it. Current Mood: nostalgicCurrent Music: TRS-80 - Don't Mess With Illinois |

Philo T Farnsworth
I finished getting HDTV reception over the air set up this week since I got my $40 rebate card.
I went to Target to buy a converter since Radio Shack was out of stock. I got a GE 22729 which was complete junk. Changing channels was slow, the video quality was bad, and it stopped working after less than a week. I exchanged it for a Venturer STB7766G which works well. It doesn't have an electric program guide like some of the other DTV boxes but total cash cost was around $14 with the rebate so it was a good deal for the price.
TV reception using rabbit ears in my ground floor living room didn't get most of the channels, so I had to run a cable to an antenna in my attic. It turned out that it was a lot less work than I was expecting because I reused the old antenna and cable TV wiring that was left behind by a previous owner. All I had to do was disconnect the cable TV hookup, splice back into the antenna, and put a terminator on the end of the cable running outside.
It is nice to get clearer reception and more channels in widescreen, but this reminds me why I rarely watch TV. Getting everything set up was more interesting than watching shows. TV does make for a decent background while working on some things, though. Restoring some vacuum tube radios from the 1920's that I have will probably be one of my next projects.
I am 4 chapters into reading The Boy Who Invented Television, and so far I would recommend it if you are interested in inventors or the history of technology.

The Pirate's Dilemma
"It’s hard for large organizations that move at glacial speeds to compete with individuals taking their content and creating new distribution systems, revenue streams and business models, but the fall of the major record labels taught the rest of the corporate world a lesson. In many cases, piracy it is helping people to innovate and create new legitimate market spaces."

Seeking advice from audiophiles
I have a big stack of music on Vinyl I want to convert to mp3 or some other more portable digital format. Getting a new USB based turntable seems appealing. A good A/D converter feeding a digital signal directly to the PC that is ripping the music seems like a better option than messing around with audio cabling and sound cards. A partial list of what I am considering: Crosley CR249 - If I was going by looks alone this would be my first choice. One of the ION turntables - Attractively priced, but I am not sure if one would do everything I want. 78 RPM playback is not an option and I would have to use software conversion for that speed. Stanton T.90 - Should work really well, but might be overkill for what I need. I would prefer a solution that works with both Windows and Mac, since I have both and will probably use my Mac with the turntable most of the time. Preserving existing investments in hardware is not a factor. I don't currently have a turntable or component based stereo system. This is not familiar territory for me. I don't follow audio hardware or software at all. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

Scientists are saying the future is going to be far more futuristic than they originally predicted
The new movie from the writer/director of Donnie Darko is out. Check out the trailer. I have read the comic that is the prequel to the movie, which is a near future sci-fi story about amnesia, terrorism, alternate energy sources, psychic powers, the end of the world, and a few other things. The casting looks really good (Sarah Michelle Gellar as an ex pornstar!?!) and the movie should be engaging if it doesn't end up being a jumbled mess.
Looks like it is a limited release given it is only running in one theater in Denver. Not sure if it will still be playing after this thursday, so I am going to catch it tonight if I can get out of work early enough.
